6. Brebeuf Crystal comes in Second and spot for International Competition
5/26/99
Eight students competed for the top award in the first International
Crystal Chemistry Competition, to be held in Glascow Scotland (August 4-13/99),
during the XVIIIth International Union of Crystallography Congress. In late April,
the best crystals from each Local Area were sent for judging to the National Level
(Guelph Ontario, the week of May 3, 1999). The top crystals from the National
Level will now be sent to Scotland for the International Competition.
Placements for National Level are:
Brampton 1- 25.6 g, was 1st overall and 11th in quality
Toronto 2 (
) 93.4 g was overall and
14th in quality
The quality (Q) of the crystal is judged on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10
representing a perfect crystal. The following factors will be considered in judging
quality:
a) match/mismatch with crystal type (out of 2)
b) presence/absence of occlusions (out of 2)
c) intact/broken edges (out of 2)
d) well formed/misformed faces (out of 2)
e) clarity/muddiness (out of 2)
Total Quality Q = x.xx (out of 10)
The total score is then determined as follows: Total
Score = [log (M+1)] x Q x 10 (M=mass of crystal in grams)
The logarithm of the mass is chosen so that large poor quality crystals
don't swamp out smaller good quality crystals.
The value 1 is added to the mass so that crystals weighing less than 1 g
get a positive score. The crystal with the highest score is the winning crystal.
Many thanks to: Andy Au, Kevin Chang, Jason Cheng, Rupert Chi Cheung Chan, Jin Soo Kang, Nick
Galatianos, Godfrey Lee and David Tran.
Good Luck Team!
7. Honourable Mention for James
Li
7/19/99
Congratulations are in order for James Li,
who received an Honourable Mention at the
Canada-Wide Science Fair in Edmonton Alberta.
8. Brebeuf captures
in York University Science Olympics
1999
Complete Olympic Results
The team of: Rupert
Chi Cheung Chan, Ross Tam, Brian Drakopulos, Alan Luck, Marco
Vane, Jim Ng, Nick Galatianos, Ewen Chan, Eric Liu, Paul Jara and Arthur
Nip captured a (from a total of 45 registered
school teams) at the York University Science Olympics on Friday May 14, 1999.
This years science-related team events included:
Compounds - Teams competed directly
against each other by making up formulae of chemical compounds in "Scrabble" TM
fashion from a pack of cards, each of which had the name of an element or radical on
it.
Rupert Chi Cheung Chan, Ross Tam,
Brian Drakopulos
Bio-Steeplechase - Teams competed
to answer multiple choice questions located at a series of obstacles or hurdles. The first
team that answered all the questions correctly was the winner. Team membersattempted
to answer the questions in relay fashion. There were 4 hurdles' and 4
questions at each hurdle.
Brian Drakopulos, Alan Luck, Marco
Vane, Jim Ng
Catapult () - Teams fired water-filled
balloons from a giant catapult made by stretching rubber tubing between football'
goalposts. Targets were placed at various distances downrange on the field.
Jim Ng, Nick Galatianos
Fermi Questions ()- Teams were required to make
estimates in answer to questions such as "How much chemical energy (in Joules) is
derived from all the food consumed by Canadians annually?"
Ewen Chan, Eric Liu, Brian Drakopulos, Alan Luck, Marco Vane
Water Rocket - Teams launched a 2
litre plastic pop bottle, partially filled with water under pressure produced with a
bicycle pump. Longest duration of flight wins.
Eric Liu (with some last minute help from team
members)
WWW Scavenger Hunt - Teams
embarked on a scavenger hunt on the web. Given a set of clues,
they followed links on the world wide web to some final destination.
Along the way they had the opportunity to collect special Easter eggs' (bonus
points) that were used in computing their score. Paul Jara and Arthur
Nip
Special thanks to Professor Kieth Aldridge of
the Physics Department at York University for making this an enjoyable day for all.
9. Brebeuf gets top honours at the
Metropolitan Toronto Region Science Fair
Congratulations to James Li who placed FIRST in his division at the Metropolitan Toronto Region Science Fair
held at the University of Toronto April 15, 1999. James has been chosen to represent
the Toronto Region at the Canada-Wide Science Fair, to be held in Edmonton Alberta, from
May 15-23 1999. We wish him all the best at this level of competition.
Special recognition also goes to Richard
Li, who placed SECOND in the same Science Fair. He received the Canadian Mathematical
Society Prize for his work on "The Divisibility Test For All Odd Numbers".
